Matters that seem like rich people’s things and that even if they have no apparent connection make you see that there is an impossible world for a great number of people who live in that same world.

From the point of view of the show it is not incompatible, but from the argumentative point of view it is contradictory that in the same gala the president of the Academy says that the profession of interpreter is the one that suffers more periods of time without work; that it is necessary to fix the unemployment benefit to accommodate the singularities of the profession and that, in the same gala, everyone wears suits and dresses that are worth more than what an annuity of unemployment is worth. isn’t it a bit perverse that the performing profession can boast of being the worst dressed workers in the world?

It’s true. Many of those dresses or suits, ties or hats are not purchased. They are rented or they are there so that the brands have a showcase and someone is encouraged to buy them. But this perversion in the background that in the show everything is illusion leaves somewhat unfocused the issue that in the same screen does not fit well the idea of glamor and the idea of unemployment. One of them is fiction and perhaps the President of the Government or the Minister of Culture or the Minister of Labor do not want to enter into that contradiction because they went there to listen and to realize that, despite their efforts, they do not dress as well as any actress. But they dress infinitely better than Jaume Roures. In that trio format combination of fiction, reality and money, is where the gala genre reached some of the intentions of pornography.

Who has more real money does not bother to dress up and who needs the window dressing overacts. But if the viewer needed to find a conflict to be entertained about how very large the families of movie people are and how much everyone owes his family, he would find the conflict more easily away from the spectacle vs. reality axis. He can find it on an axis that applies to the rest of society because, whatever the films are about, they are not so different from the society that produces them. And in the Goyas, as in any other part of the world, there is an element of class and that institutional claim to understand the difficulties of working in the cinema also has some class jumps that not even Georgina Rodriguez’s wardrobe can hide.

There is an aristocracy of Spanish cinema and it is not decided by artistic merit. Pedro Almodóvar’s constant complaint that the Academy does not give him favored treatment was disproved at the Goyas with the immense affection they gave him when they awarded the leading actress of his next film, Cate Blanchet. Blanchet deserves many awards, but there are not so many coincidences in the world. Perhaps the Academy wants to recognize Almodovar for something that is not in his films. Something that has more to do with personality.

For the Super Bowl you don’t need to be dressed up. Despite being an event where everything has to be XXXL, the attendees try very hard to look normal. But we know better. You have to save a lot of money to be part of the show, even if you live in California. Television reviews a collection of celebrity faces that would be the folly of any autograph collector. The three unions that are mainly represented are athletes beyond the elite, actresses and actors who do not depend on the claims of the president of the Spanish Academy and musicians who do not star in the intermission show. The Super Bowl is dominated by sports jerseys (although it would have to be seen at what prices they are) and a relaxation in attire from which TV narrators and commentators are completely left out.

There is one thing in which the Goya Awards and the Super Bowl are similar and it is not the use of Eminem and Sabina: a clueless viewer will understand that the main argument of each event was displaced. That neither the Goya Awards talk about cinema nor the Super Bowl is a sporting event. That the interest and the forces at work are different. It is possible that he will feel more clueless with the Goyas. Because at the Super Bowl there is a game to tell, at award ceremonies no one is ever sure what story they want to tell.

As it is undiagnosed we can only deduce that there is a galas syndrome. It is something that prevents film, television or theater professionals from turning the night of their recognition into a spectacle. It is not a problem of script or direction, it is not a problem of sets or masters of ceremonies. It happens that just on the night when the excellence of a work is supposed to be recognized, the industry decides to suspend the skills of the profession. On the night when everyone can be watching, the industry decides to behave in a way that is radically different from the way they want viewers to pay attention to them. And we have to understand emotion and live. But managing emotion and live performance is a show business person’s own skill set. The night of the Goya Gala (or the Maestro Mateo or the María Casares, etc…) does not seem to be the right night for the entertainment sector to decide to stop performing. In the Super Bowl, as in Georgina Rodriguez’s reality show, no one ever stops performing. Even if it is a sport and the result matters, they are there for the millions of viewers to have the apology of the event, of the collective celebration. They are there so that the world has a reason to stop and watch. Even if we all know that it is representation, or precisely because of it.

And even without going to see how Gio, Cristiano Ronaldo’s wife, lives, you turn on the TV or any other screen and they start to show you things to brag about.
