She looked them passed, like distracted sheep grazing some grass, here or there. The smallest of all of them, red from the effort of following the flock, stopped to look at the girl, and she thought she was as small as her. Rebecca found later a chorus of clouds, and asked them what song they were singing because each one of them was in the shape of a violin, of a flute, of a drum and even of a piano that only had white keys. A trumpet-playing cloud answered that they were the music of the wind. A plain destroyed the orchestra, and Rebecca started to feel more interested in the lines that the mechanical fantasy of flight left behind it. Tied to those lines travelled a cloud with the face of a boxer, and the little girl asked him if hits hurt. He lifted his glove to answer that you always learn something of everything, and with the same gesture he haunted away a group of noisy birds. Rebecca had received from her father the troubles that seagulls caused when they darken the horizon, but all the ones that were flying against the backdrop of the afternoon sky were immediately displaced by a million woollen fishes without any weaver fish in them, that invented for her a transparent house: it had white windows, a cloud sitting in the ceiling to make for the smoke of a chimney, and decorations on the walls because every day was a birthday day. To give them a million hugs, the small fishes turned themselves into rain, and while they were hugging all the girl’s body, they accomplished their natural destiny of being water like Rebecca’s destiny was to grow up without finishing this business of living far away from me.

Rebecca painted the clouds quickly quickely because the summer was ending and the sun was still naked.
