Five years ago, Ch\u00e9vere turned thirty. Now it is thirty-five, and between exhibitions, disembarkations, books, films and the fact that the evil does not calm down, they have not done anything to document the reality that is so often concealed. Let’s remember the memory.<\/p>

I think it was a discotheque, the first place I saw Ch\u00e9vere. They were singing dressed as cowboys from the west, and I think there was a whip like the Blues Brothers.<\/p>

Even today, some people still use the adjective alternative<\/em> to refer to Ch\u00e9vere but that description is not very useful because, by now, they are already the best-known and most recognized company in Galicia and, what’s more, one of the oldest. They look young, which may distort the portrait somewhat, and they tend to be mischievous and also do not letting themselves be applauded too much when the shows end. Ch\u00e9vere is mainstream today in Galicia and this is another of those surprising paradoxes offered by this country which is said to be beautiful, Catholic and sentimental. Ch\u00e9vere is none of those three things, and there they are: taking the opposite view to fixing the discourse, doing biographies of Amancio Ortega, so nobody complains we do not have anything to say.<\/p>

As thirty years have passed, we must remember that there was a time when the company was a herd of young people more eager to provoke than to study. It was that story, somewhere between barroom fun and university listlessness. It was a theatre group that wanted to look like a rock band, that even put on stage a pop culture that didn’t fit in with the institutional culture of Galicia. It was a group that took conventions very seriously: they didn’t respect any of them. The distance from convention was maintained over the years. That spirit is still here. But as Che would say – Guevara, not the one from O Irixo – “today everything has a less dramatic tone because we are more mature, but the fact is repeated”. Hooliganism – which is another adjective that, as alternative, does not define something by itself but by what the rest of things are – has moved from the front line to the back but continues moving the company’s intention.<\/p>

Although Ch\u00e9vere staged R\u00edo Bravo for the third time, it is not a nostalgic company. I think they’re putting on their greatest hits again because they’re surprised to be here and still be together, and that, more or less, the intentions are still the same. They are surprised because, thirty years ago, there were three or four crises to live through, several splits in the nationalist left, the whole Fraga and post-Fragaism were missing. Feij\u00f3o was missing, the second Feij\u00f3o was missing, and the third is still missing. The Galician audiovisual sector and Agadic were missing. And we were never all there; the prisoners were always missing. So, the spectators were surprised by Ch\u00e9vere, and so was part of the profession. That’s why the surprise, and that’s why we continue to reclaim the reality of the present. Because Ch\u00e9vere is still here with more fun and lucidity than all the councils of the Xunta that fall on Thursdays. Because, despite everything, they haven’t lost their humour or absurdity. Also, because they have the advantage: with Patricia de Lorenzo on stage, everything is funnier. More theatre. Better.<\/p>
