A minute memory and a song.

Narf was sinless. Musically. The rest is none of my business. Narf was free from sin because now and then he would go away, and we almost didn’t notice. And then he’d come back, and we’d almost have to ask him when he’d left. He played some things and others and he didn’t pretend to change the course of the music but to change the rhythm of the listener’s life.

Narf went to Mozambique and came back more relaxed because, unlike many Europeans who travel to Africa, he didn’t go looking for fish quotas or commercial rhythms. Narf went to listen and let himself be carried away by the waves. He went to Mozambique and came back calmer, and in that, he was already ahead of the greats: John Lennon went to India and came back more cynical. I don’t take away his reasons. Sexy Sadie.

Narf dealt with the cynicism of the others much better than Lennon and he had the necessary calm to turn groups into orchestras and songs into hymns. Narf came back from Africa and turned his music, our music, around. As I am from the interior, I am suspicious. Because I always thought that the music Narf brought back was already his before. Before he travelled, before his name was Narf, before the Psicofónica, before Nicho Varullo, before the Quinindiola’s. Before before.

Narf was free of sin because he didn’t show any posturing and because he admired The Beatles with the same sense as he did thirty years ago. And he neither boasted nor regretted it. Nor did he regret treating the guitars well or searching for melodies beyond the destitution of sustained melancholy. But now he’s off on another journey and we’ll have to see what it will bring. What he left behind should have been clear to all of us by now. We have a lot of music to thank him for. And we also have a lot to thank him for, that he never wanted to have a farm in Africa.

Narf & Abraldes performed in November 2009 with other Galician bands songs by The Beatles.
