But we don’t know what castrapism is. We accept flags just as we accept outsiders: in a friendly manner. We accept flags and turn our problems into symbols of identity. And of course we don’t want to give them up. From time to time, especially on religious holidays, we Galicians hang flags in our windows as if we were hanging out the washing. We try to hang them neatly ironed, just to be on the safe side. Because we may be ugly, but we’re clean. Flags are like us, Castrapists, and they keep creasing because they want to represent complicated things in a simple way.

We hang out our washing with great style because first the procession passes by, and then time passes, and people tend to look at us only if they recognise us. Nothing flatters us more than that feeling of people saying our clean washing is on display.

Galicia pressed the self-destruct button a long time ago. But it’s a Galician button. So, rain and calm. As there is less and less rain, we’re hanging up the flags of self-destruction as calmly as possible: slowly but surely. With the same tranquillity attributed to bucolic villages, with the same slowness with which Europe’s longest summer afternoons fade away. We’re there, smoothing out the creases in the flags so that no one can say we’re unfriendly or rebellious or obnoxious—or so that they say it in a kind way. Which is another way of not saying it at all.

We’re raising the flags because life is a very dirty business, but at our own funeral we have no choice but to turn up well-groomed.

We are a castrapist country.
