It was monarchical because it explained how the monarchy works and it was anti-monarchical because any explanation of how the monarchy works is reasonably anti-monarchical. We should not despise what the walls say or how the pictures end because in both cases there is a verse from the future, a poetic justice advancement, however useless lyric may be in these cases.

The difference between the Borbones and any normal family is that their history is perfectly documented. Ordinary people can ignore who their great-grandfather was and go about their normal lives. The Borbones know who their great-grandfather was and we cannot ignore it. The paradox of the monarchy in Spain is to be an institution justified in the same History that does not fail to demonstrate that statistically there is no good Borbon. That they are neither neighbors nor reliable. And when looked at through the rigor that the monarchy demands to be looked at, they are not even Spanish. Any history book explains that maintaining the Spanish monarchy requires more faith than data, but this is a time of data.

Proverbs are a cultural form that does not require many hours of reading. It’s a folksy culture. It walks the streets with the agility of the Covid explaining that a bad beginning makes a bad ending and the leopard never changes his spots. Proverbs also point out that every cloud has a silver lining, and the longest night will have an end. There should be a book entitled The political backwardness of Spain explaining that this country is still stuck in a 19th century debate, invoking History without having read it. There would be a meeting point between the folksy and scientific knowledge. The place where things are in place: the tiled floor, next to the bathroom, in an abandoned school. A time before the ruin. It is not exile. It is expulsion.
