We Europeans never leave Europe. It’s intrinsic within us, as if it came on our backs, in the form of a passport, vaccinations, language breviary, protective ointments, cotton socks, mosquito repellent, embassy telephone and a moral superiority that no universal history, no matter how objective it may be, can justify. We travel with history in our backpacks and almost never manage to descend that step that distances us from the true nature of things in the rest of the world. Because the rest of the world is almost never Europe, even though this is a blunt reality that we find hard to accept. The rest of the world is not adorned with the advantages of drinking water, of constant electric light, of supermineralized and hypervitaminated supermarket shelves, with an ambulatory at a reasonable distance or with any of the luxuries that, so many times, we understand Europeanly that they are necessities. Europe also comes with us as a way of reasoning and surely this is one of the great problems for Europeans to understand what is happening in that part of the world that can no longer ignore us.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
